Thermal imaging cameras are different from normal cameras that capture images in the visible spectrum. In infrared photography, the film and the image sensor are used to react sensitively to infrared light. Films are more sensitive to visible light, while an infrared filter pass through the camera, block much of the visible light spectrum, making them appear black or deep red.
A person in a dark room will not see anything other than the faint red glow emitted by the infrared LEDs of the camera, but the camera will be able to see what is recorded.
During the day and at night, the camera filter controls the light that penetrates the camera sensor. If it is dark enough, the camera switches to monochrome or black and white mode and the filter is removed so that the light hits the sensor.
On the other hand, night vision goggles use image enhancement technology to collect and amplify all available light, including infrared light, so you can see clearly in the dark.
The infrared radiation (a form of energy associated with heat) is independent of light, so the camera can detect it and take an image even in total darkness. These different technologies allow smart home surveillance cameras to transmit images even when it is dark outside.
