2020 is the year India is heading for the celebration of the 74th Independence Day. 15th Aug marks the anniversary of 1947, when India became an independent country. British rule ended, power transfer and independence coincided with the birth of India's first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, at midnight on August 14 and 15, 1947.
India's Independence Act came into force on August 14, 1947, dividing India into two countries known as the Birth of Pakistan. Independence meant the end of British colonial rule in India and paved the way for the so-called partition, with Pakistan and East Bengal (now Bangladesh) emerging as separate nations.
The Indian national flag is hoisted from the Red Fort in Delhi, and flying the flag is a common sight on Independence Day.
