The Year Of Online Study
Updated: Feb 21
Surprisingly, schools in India have now moved to online study halls. It's a battle between students, teachers, and parents. Since March 2020, whenever we switch on the television, all we come across is the news of people dying and cured. Everyone is worried about their life and future. Keeping ourselves and children busy become the need since the lock-down, and virtual classes have ended up being useful in these difficult times.
We salute teachers who show constant dedication to help shaping future of India.
Online class is a challenge.
Technology plays a vital role across all sectors. When it comes to education, it integrates both face-to-face and online learning opportunities. Practical activities such as interacting, observing, recording, analyzing, and even driving data interpretation are happening from technology online. Despite the accessibility of the content, its application, how to utilize it and convey it to the children in the correct way is a challenge. Integrating technology from a teacher-centered space mostly works as a facilitator rather than a trainer.
Virtual meet vs. physical meet.
At the point when the teacher meets a student physically, a connection is built up and it gets likely to manage or explain any circumstance right away. While in an online class, that connection was missing. In any case, soon teachers will learn to build that connection by delivering high-quality content online. For students to take an interest, present, or participate actively in the class, it is very important to deliver lectures in a proper manner with quality. There are multiple apps available that help to create highly interactive content. We still don’t know when things will have returned to usual. So, with one motive – “Continuous learning” - teachers should plan, prepare, and keeps things running.
To maintain a work-life balance; it is yet important to opt for some game events along with online study. We all know it’s not an easy task for teachers to create a friendly atmosphere that accepts everyone's needs. Activities like yoga, meditation, music, and sometimes dance help to make their mind more relaxing. Technical tools make the classroom fun, so children are excited to learn.
Maintaining records on register or paper is not an easy task. Records on student performance, class attendance, courses taken by students, school enrollment, and others can be stored on a computer. Computer records are not easily lost though, they can be accessed at any time, as opposed to traditional methods of recording on papers that can easily be misplaced.
Prepare students for their future careers.
The use of phones and technology enables teachers to prepare for the real-world environment. The world is changing at a neck pace towards technology. Thus, it is crucial that students are equipped with the latest skills that will help them cope with change. Integration of technology in the field of education provides learning opportunities to pursue careers such as education, programming, IT, and others.
Sharpens student skills.
The information on the internet is less expensive as compared to buying multiple textbooks for different courses. Using technology, one can access the most up-to-date information quickly and easily. It enhances collaboration between students and teachers by which information can easily share from any location. Complications such as communication, self-direction for complex problem-solving, research, and choice are acquired and enhanced using technical tools. It allows students to demonstrate independence.
Multi-media approach to education.
Using an audio-visual approach in education, using audio-video, short movie or story make perception easier. Students learn rather than listen; this helps them remember that they learn more easily. Such teaching engages student animation, video and diagrams tell students to participate in answering questions, group discussions, etc.
While thinking about web-based learning, be prepared for the possible 4 disadvantages:
Interaction: Having the option to gain access from anyplace, sometimes creates a negative in the realm of web-based learning. During the physical meet, one can meet, interact with teachers and other students. That social viewpoint is lost when it comes to online study. Some online work involves group study which is often more difficult when you can't meet face-to-face.
Diverse teaching style: Without a physical presence, the teaching options are constrained. Course material in the class vs. online may be the same but when it comes to convenience, physical learning is more effective. This is because teachers can tailor the guidance based on students’ reactions. During the online study, there is a number of limitations like hands-on experience, live projects, or experience.
Response or Feedback: While delivering a lecture online, we might notice that the feedback gets delayed; we get immediate responses during a physical lecture. Also, when we have a question-answer activity taking place in real-time, it is more streamlined and in a natural flow vs. online. Things can be clarified in a more suitable manner and with examples that don’t fulfill during online sessions.
Accountability: Online class makes it easier for students to make their availability and participation as little as possible. The teacher is prepared to control participation in the class. Virtual learning puts greater responsibility on students and their parents. At home, it’s difficult to create the classroom infrastructure and so children sometimes may skip classes or lose interest.
Online study or virtual study is the future of the education system. Traditional education is already left behind. Of course, online study or taking classes is not an easy task. Sometimes, technology can act as an assessment tool. Before COVID-19, technology is used for entertainment but now everyone understands the importance of technology. Time has come to upscale our knowledge as it brings new opportunities to our life. With technology integrated into the education curriculum, it gives flexibility to students to read multiple different topics.
